Exploring New Horizons in Companion Animal Research

Change is constant and inevitable. New discoveries are being made, and new technologies are being developed, which makes it impossible to maintain the status quo. The more we learn, the more we must adapt and change our ways of thinking and doing things.

Over the years, Healthy Pets New Zealand has endeavoured to fund NZ-based research aimed at enhancing the health and well-being of our beloved furry companions. Now, as we look ahead to future, our purpose doesn’t change, but the way we fund this research needs a shake up.

We are forever grateful to those organisations like our Principal Partner PD Insurance; the Companion Animal Veterinarians branch and the NZ veterinary association itself; SVS Veterinary supplies; Vet Marlborough; Waikiwi Vets; Tauranga Vets; Integrity Animal Care; VetCo Ltd, Northern Southland Veterinary Services; and Buller Vets who choose to support us with financial and administrative support. However, as with everything, research is becoming more and more expensive.

We’re excited to be partaking in an Auckland University Marketing project, helping us to identify how we can do better at securing a sustainable future of research funding. If you are a veterinary professional, then hopefully you’ve seen our recent request to take part in a short survey. If not, then please find the link here. We’d really appreciate it if you can take 10-15minutes to complete it and help us make the future of companion animal research in NZ even brighter.

We’re also looking to revamp the way we fund projects. While there will always be our Discretionary fund for innovative and exciting research across the full spectrum of companion animal health, we’d also like to take a more targeted approach by putting together research proposals based on what’s important to companion animal healthcare in NZ right now. We’d love to hear from you what areas you think currently need more attention – parasitology? genetic diseases? new technology? specific diseases? Please get in touch via our Facebook page or email

At the heart of our future direction lies a steadfast commitment to the well-being of companion animals. Our research will continue to prioritize the health, happiness, and longevity of our furry friends, ensuring that they receive the care and attention they deserve. Whether it's exploring new ways to prevent and treat disease, promoting optimal nutrition and exercise, or advancing our understanding of animal behaviour and welfare, we remain unwavering in our dedication to improving the lives of pets everywhere.

As we continue on this journey into the future of companion animal research, I invite each and every one of you to join us in our pursuit of excellence. Whether you're a researcher, a veterinarian, a pet owner, or simply a passionate advocate for animal welfare, your support and involvement are invaluable as we work towards a brighter, healthier future for our furry companions.

Thanks for your support.
